Usually, any form of martial arts is stereotypically a male-dominated realm however our dojo always believed that everyone is capable of martial arts. It doesn’t matter what race, gender, or sexuality that one has, it all depends on one’s ability to act and execute the techniques to the best of their abilities. To put it simply Cause and Effect. So when an amazing opportunity was laid before us to showcase self-defense techniques for women.
We were focusing on women’s self-defense techniques due to the event’s purpose of being a women-focused science event called “Women in Zcience”. Being organised and hosted at Penang Tech Dome we are privileged to be warmly acquainted with the committee from the previous event that the dojo also participated in during “Japanese Technology Week”. Since the event was being held on a Friday morning most of the dojo members couldn’t make it to the event due to our own commitments. Our sensei devised a plan that we would do a pre-record of the self-defense techniques that we would be showcasing. The members who volunteered for the task for performing and recording the video agree that on the 12th of July 2020 would be the most convenient time to do it.
The next step was to allocate which members were going to perform as our sensei choreographed and narrates the techniques. Eileen the squirrel of Mushinkan volunteered to be the damsel while the jester of Mushinkan, Kevin would be the scum. We all gathered at the dojo after our lunches, ready to record the video. Surprisingly a friend of the dojo Yee How appeared to help us for the recording.
It took quite some time for Eileen to learn the techniques. But through her dedication and understanding, she managed to perform it flawlessly against the scum! We had fun and laughed but the job was only half done. Which led us to the editing of the video. Our sensei had a vision on how to portray the video in an informative and funny way. The video’s aesthetic is the 1930s-40s style PSA in Technicolour!!!!!
