Kotegashi, The Wrist Lock Throw

As of writing this just recently sensei revisited a classic technique, The Kotegashi! A wrist lock throw, that in my personal experience I cannot seem to perform that well. However the variation that Sensei Franky had demonstrated to us was the Mushinkan style of it. As he demonstrated it to us 3 times. So here’s what I can observe from watching the demonstration.

As he showed the Shite will be in a Migi no Kamai stance (Right Hand Stance) while the uke will be in a Migi no Kamae stance before transitioning into the Aetemi stance (strike stance). As the uke launches a ski (Straight punch) the Shite will enter to his/her left. While entering to the uke’s opening the Shite will chop into the uke’s inner elbow as the Shite does a turn that’s similar to a taino henko ni while maintaining Tenkkan.

At this point the Shite will lock the uke’s inner elbow in his/her armpit giving plenty of time to now make another hirikei no sei ni towards the Shite’s right hand. As the turn is being performed the Shite can divert the uke’s hand to perform a wrist lock throw.

So here are my thoughts on this rendition of the technique. I couldn’t help but feel that we’ve done this before 2 years ago (2019). What even clicked with me now after learning Mushin-Ryu was how it was similar to the 4th Kata.
