The Senpai, Kohai Dynamic

You can always learn something new from your Kohai's

MCO a word that a few months ago plagued everyone in this lovely country of Malaysia. But alas here we are, we are recovering from all of the craziness of Covid. I would like to talk about the positive experiences after the MCO that I have done during this time which is being a Senpai.

For most of us in I would consider out tight knit community of Mushinkan as privileged. Privileged in the sense of us being able to join and support the classes of Mushinkan Academy. Although I maybe one of the early members of this tight knit community I sometimes feel that I am not that great of a Senpai. I make mistakes and I don't know many techniques by name.

Embracing the new

I believe many of us would have that predicament when leading or managing a class. However throughout the many years of spending time in this dojo learning and training I always tell myself that it's a learning journey. No one is perfect. I especially enjoy the times where my Kohai's do something really cool or genius. It really does break the mold from some of the dull parts of the class. From there the martial art evolves, we embrace and celebrate it.

Final Thoughts

So what does this all mean? It' up to you on how you see it. Personally for me I find this like a cycle of how we grow personally. We tend to subconsciously think that as a senpai we are better or we know more than our kohai's. But that attitude will be too stiff and you can't flow with the class. Sometimes you will need to learn ow to listen or observe (Mitei Dori). Once we set aside our own stubborn beliefs you will see a new world.
